Along
with core academics, strong emphasis is put on Physical Education and competitive
sports. Children with growing bodies need to move and work those bodies!
Stretching the limbs, getting air in the lungs and gaining competence and skill
in physical activities is vital to a well-rounded education and healthy,
happy children.
Mary’s
Schoolhouse and Shuttleworth Academy have a Physical Education program that gets children
moving and working out to the fullest of their potential. This regularly
includes volleyball, basketball and running. At the start of each PE session,
children are put through a full work-out of calisthenics which includes sit
ups, jumping jacks, push ups and crunches to warm up, followed by a sports
activity. PE is typically 3 days per week.
Each
spring, the school holds “Sports Day” in a local park, where they compete in
soccer, football and running races.
Summer
session includes swimming lessons 2 days per week at the pool at LA City
College where they gain valuable skills in swimming.
All
students wear uniforms for their PE classes that consist of Mary’s Schoolhouse
and Shuttleworth Academy t-shirts and black shorts or pants and shoes
appropriate for exercise.
